Transportation Intercounty Connector, Contract B

KEY CHALLENGES & PROJECT DETAILS

  • A new 7.1 mile six-lane divided highway, automated toll way, including a diamond interchange and a single point interchange.
  • There are 10 mainline bridges totaling over 600,000 SF of deck and 150-ft. average spans.
  • Five crossover bridges span 4,400 LF over streams, wetlands and 100-year floodplains
  • The dual bridges are long spans that cross over sensitive streams at Northwest Branch, Good Hope/Gum Spring/Paint Branch.
  • Design and phased construction of five arterial roadways with pedestrian access.
  • 20 retaining walls ranging 5-ft. to 28-ft. and seven miles of sound barriers
  • Ten cross culverts were designed and installed to facilitate the landscape’s natural drainage.
  • Construction was in the midst of natural features, including wetlands, parklands, rare and endangered species, forested habitat, and streams.
  • The project crosses the Northwest Branch and Upper Paint Branch Watersheds and the Upper Branch Special Protection Area of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, crowning it as the most restrictive and environmentally-sensitive of all four Intercounty Connector contracts.
